Concordia Damen has completed a successful trial run of the world’s first new-build hydrogen-powered inland shipping barge, owned by Dutch shipping company Lenten Scheepvaart, marking an important step towards zero-emission transport on Dutch inland waterways.
The hydrogen electric cargo ship Antonie (WEVA) was trialled in late October, when the vessel was inspected by Lloyd’s Register and received a provisional certificate to be put into service.
With the hydrogen containers not expected to arrive until the end of this year, the trial was able to test the advanced diesel-electric propulsion system.
