Today, (Monday 15th) the Port of Virginia’s Portsmouth Marine Terminal (PMT) opens to cargo operations after an almost three year closure, with the arrival of trucks carrying export containers.
The first vessel will call in early October and the 30-acre operation, expects to have handle between 75,000 and 100,000 containers annually.
PMT, owned by the Virginia Port Authority (VPA), has a 287-acre footprint, a main channel of 13.6 m (45 ft), depth alongside of 12.7 m(42 ft), six post-Panamax gantry cranes of which three will be dedicated to the container operation and a rail service via the Norfolk & Portsmouth Belt Line.
